Logo Practice

(Created in Photoshop) Was doing some logo practice; So I decided to try and replicate WoW's icon. I was pretty happy with how it turned out, AND I got very familiar with layer effect textures, shadows, patterns, and bevels. Also I just had to make the Warcraft "W" a "J" for Josh instead :P **No copyright infringement intended, done solely for personal practice.

Gave this old one a little bit of a make over. Mostly just darkened and adjusted some colors as well as redid the face on the faerie. I'm a lot happier with this version :) Also, to this day - this is still one of my favorite drawings.

I'm a background fiend!...that or I really wanted to try a winter landscape...I don't know if you can see it, but the wandering wizard is sprinkling the land with powdered snow. Done completely in photoshop.

Story: The land has been dead for some time now...the season do not change...the water runs dry. But still there are those who remain to fix the broken land...the wandering wizard changes the seasons, bringing winter to the dead of fall.

My friends and I are planning on doing a collaborative graphic novel, and I think this is the character I really want to use. She was inspired by both some steampunk/final fantasy-esque influences. Her name is Raelynne and I do want to develop a creature sidekick type character that she ventures alongside with. Hopefully you’ll see more of her in the future.

His version is much more shorter and cartoony :P Anyway, Flopsweat is a long time friend of Jack Gutowski's. They aid each other now and again fighting crime together, and also fighting themselves given the proper circumstances. With Flopsweat's mastery of sweat powered artillery and Curly Fry's deadly thunder punches, the two form a powerful alliance.

Theresa is Jack's love interest. She's a police officer dedicated to fighting crime. She's torn between following the rules and helping Jack stop crime by abusing her police responsibilities and leaking tips to Jack. She's a fairly good shot with a gun, and has a conservative but sharp personality. Their relationship is to remain in secret...for if exposed they might both be in trouble.

The Conductor

Arch nemesis to Curly Fry, the Conductor is a goliath of a man standing around 7 feet tall, and bigger upon electrical consumption. His body's molecular structure has been formatted to feed off electrical currents expanding his body's density and size. He can grow to heights of 23 feet tall, but any higher than that-things begin to go wrong. He's a powerful foe that causes Curly Fry to fight hand to hand, for using his electrical currents will only make Conductor stronger...or is that also the key to his defeat?

Curly Fry

Here's a concept sketch of what Jack Gutowski could look like as Curly Fry. He stands at 7 ft tall, but can expand to stand 9-10 ft tall, however he becomes more unstable and flimsy the more he stretches his stance. His signature move is to activate his electrical cords to send a static pulse coursing through is organic titanium coils, he then contracts his forearm coil, clenches his fist, locates his target and fires forth a statically charged impact punch that can reach a target more than 20 feet way with a devastating thunder punch. He can contract his leg coils to jump 500 ft in the air!

If I ever get the urge to do a graphic novel type story, I have these two characters I really want to incorporate into it. The little wood goblin in the tree is named Loofburrow. Aedalyn is the faerie. They're both very curious and wind up in trouble more often than not. And all of the other faeries think she's very odd for having befriended a wood goblin, but they could care less...for the forest is theirs to explore and protect.

I knew I wanted to do an underwater environment of some type...so naturally I wanted to draw a mermaid, but didn't want to go with a totally traditional look, so I decided to add some more fish qualities to her look with the fin along her back and forearms. Overall I was happy with how the lighting turned out.

I dunno if it reads too well but there's a little guy on top of the rock monster. He's controlling it...as well as raising up two more in the background. i tried to stay away from defining contour lines this time. It still needs some tweaking I think, but I think it's headed somewhere.

I decided to name her Faylinn and him Klippe...They are brother and sister and fly freely among the forests leaves. Small guardians, they keep watch over the creatures and the plants...the sunlight speckles through the trees. They get a taste of it's warmth, but only a taste; for they turn to water if they stay in the light...Their curiosity draws them to the surface. To experience it...just to see what colors the sun paints the earth from above the treetops...

The Great Hornbill Character Sketches

So I noticed tonight that our Hornbill character was just kind of a...well, bird-ish. Boring, stiff and had no personality. The design was cool, but there was nothing more to it. So here are a few sketches where I tried to have the Hornbill's personality show through a bit more.

She very much contrasts Monkey. The Hornbill is an elegant high class lady of the tallest tree branches. She's a bit snooty, but always proper. Proud and confident her gift will win baby man's approval.

This started out as a pose in my figure drawing class. It was done in vine charcoal. I scanned it in, but decided I really didn't like the legs on the figure-they just didn't turn out as strong as the upper body. So I gave her a mermaid fin. I was going to try and make the digital paint mimic the charcoal quality, but I kind of like the hybrid look or digital and traditional...She's just waking up from a short nap in the mortal sun.

Sorry if there seems to be an overwhelming number a female drawings lately...it's all my figure drawing class could get ahold of. Don't worry, the man stuff will come.

The Holy Spirit

This was a piece I did that just shows a slightly exaggerated and pretty epic vortex of spiritness...but in all seriousness, I really just wanted to show the power behind what it means to be changed for Christ. It's not some little tweak that inches it's way into your lifestyle. It's life changing...it needs to be. And if it's not, then maybe you're not there quite yet. I like to think it just feels like a whirlwind of fresh air, and I don't think it's an easy sort of change so the experience might be hard to endure...transform.

I decided to do a picture that put two characters together. I realized I often do my drawings posing to camera rather than capturing the moment they're in. Kind of like doing a photo shoot in a studio as opposed to going outside and taking random pictures of people. There's more realism to be found...I might further this exploration. We shall see.

This illustration is open to interpret however you want...there's a story behind these two characters.

This was an image that originally started out as a simple sketch for figure drawing practice. Well, I really liked the pose and how it turned out. Thus I could not help myself so scanned in it went. I inked the lines in photoshop.

Abbygael's curse is her wandering thoughts...she cannot believe what is real. Her dark thoughts splinter away from her body, exposing her...she is helpless to their needs...she can only sit, and watch her sins drift into the world...it wasn't her choice to act as this bridge, but it is her burden she bears.

So I'm using sketches from my figure drawing class to get some nice poses and then coloring em in painter. I decided to go a bit more abstract with this one, I don't normally go abstract so it was kinda fun :)

The Azure Whisp is a wandering water spirit...Her life was taken while she was still so very young. A death no person should have to face. Cursed by the man she longed for...she would do anything for him, but still he looked away.

...and now, her tears fade into dust...the lake she wanders keeps her secret. Those who run their hands through its pristine waters, can feel her pain...her sorrow.

I've been drawing princesses for awhile now, so I figured it was time for a change in pace. This guy is just a little...undead. I sketched him out first, then scanned it in and colored/textured him in photoshop. I ended up having 35 layers to make this guy come to life...in a manner of speaking.

I did it with acrylic paint on a standard canvas, but go figure I forgot my paint brushes back in Indiana, so this painting was done entirely using my mother's make-up brushes :P (I had her permission btw)

Wendel, the character in my novel, loves to daydream...and in one sequence he imagines this world up in the clouds, a city called Avenclou (proounced Ay-ven-cl-ow)...In this peaceful realm the people here glide to wherever they need to go. They cannot fly, they can only glide. There are numerous geiser wind stations located all over Avenclou. These are powerful upward erupting wind gusts that propel an Avenclou high into the air so that they may glide to where ever they so choose...This is an illustration of Wendel would look like if he were an Avenclou.

I've recently been into this style of adding decorative detail along the animals with pen and ink. I really like how this one turned out.
